The Double Helix: late night science and grooves
Wednesday 12 April 2006

Coming up tonight: we commemorate the anniversary of Galileo's trial by discussing his Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences; we also celebrate the international festival that is Yuri's Night - the day that the first human entered outer space, and the day of the first ever space shuttle flight. In honour of April being National Poetry Month and Math Awareness Month we'll be talking about the fusion of maths and poetry - in particular inviting you to email us your own Fibonnaci Poems: haiku-like poems of 6 lines and 20 syllables in the pattern 1/1/2/3/5/8. Email them to helixradio[at]gmail.com.

Also: we talk about the latest news in science including: scientists discover chocolate isn't good for your mood, and taking 40,000 ecstasy pills is bad for your short-term memory · physicist in Connecticut seeks funding for time machine · California scientists grow brain, heart and bone cells from human testical cells · 'missing link' fossil discovered in Canada · new species of tube-snouted ghost knifefish found in Brazil · melting of polar ice caps augurs well for Connecticut lobster population (bring it on) · researchers show that what women want in a man is changing as they become more financially independent · and lots more including zeptomole biology, black hole mergers, entangled photon holes and two-dimensional light.
